Jimmi Mayes Started his career in Jackson, MS playing in Juke Joints.
Jimmi was raised in Jackson, MS near Jackson State University. He continued his career by travelling internationally and performing with many of the greats of his time in New York and Chicago who wanted the best of the best sideman on drums that they knew. Jimmi also had his own band during his career and he was the toast of Mexico City for a year performing regularly.
Jimmi Mayes played and toured with Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Pinetop Perkins, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Robert Junior Lockwood, and more over the course of his career. He backed Marvin Gaye and later became the bandleader for Joey Dee & the Starliters who had a monster hit the “Peppermint Twist” during the time Jimmi was with them. He became good friends with Jimi Hendrix and eventually he was asked by Jimi Hendrix to record with him. Mayes is on four of Hendrix’s albums.
Jimmi Mayes released a "tell all" book by the highly recognized Mississippi Press which some say should be turned in a movie!

Jimmi Mayes Book was published by University Press in 2014. A review in Blues Blast Magazine says "As you read this book, it is easy to envision the story of Jimmi Mayes being retold on the big screen. All the elements are there for a movie production – the lure of bright lights, compelling music, sex, drugs and plenty of star power. At the end, you wish that Mayes had been more forthcoming with his tales so that the book stretched out for another hundred pages. This fascinating sage makes it clear that Mayes was indeed a sideman to the stars. Definitely recommended!"
